Who Controls Your Network? ... Technology or You?
Today,
it seems that technology has taken over the driver's seat in many
companies. Business owners often find it difficult to understand the
theory, practices, or procedures required by advanced technology, and
are challenged to keep up with the constant changes. Because, the
world of business is driven by the power and speed of this technology,
frequent adjustments are necessary.
The need to keep abreast of
change is crucial for the personal computer (PC). Many business owners
must continuously upgrade their hardware and software, simply to stay
in business. Before committing the funds to such purchases, they can
turn to a variety of resources, including:
• PC and business magazines
• The Internet
• Friends and associates
• Store clerks or sales personnel
• Consultants
In
today's high tech world, it's nearly impossible to grow or even operate
a business without a PC, new business owners must invest in a
computer. After much study, conversation and fretting, they do so.
But, eventually, without access to the data stored on the PC, the owner
will find it difficult to accurately measure the savings in time or
dollars. Soon, it becomes obvious that the business can no longer run
efficiently without access to the data stored in the PC.
Eventually,
several more computers will be purchased. Many reasons are used to
justify the purchase, some valid, some merely perceived. In this phase
of the company's technology growth, it becomes apparent that the
individual computers should have the capability of communicating with
each other, so a "network" is established.
The type of
network, choice of administrator and operation of the network are
rarely defined upfront, even though the network will become the pivot
point for daily operations of the office, business and communications.
The network's importance becomes quite obvious, though, when it goes
down. In many cases, the entire operation of the company is disabled.
It is at this point that the crucial question arises: "Who controls
the network?"
Ideally, a technology expert has
planned and implemented the network, and an appropriate choice has been
made as to who controls it. There are numerous benefits to having a
well-designed and properly implemented network, including (but not
limited to):
• Common files and data
• Internal communications
• Information backup
• Disaster recovery
• External communications
• Security protection
• Storage of large files
Is
your network performing optimally for you? Many networks fail to meet
the needs of the companies they were designed to serve. A poorly
specified network can actually cause more problems than it solves. An
improperly managed network will cost, rather than save, time, money,
and data.
A properly functioning network will be a pleasure to
use and an enhancement to profits. Hopefully, you control your
network, rather than the other way around! How can you be sure that
your network is properly designed, implemented and managed? An expert
system consultant can perform an audit to determine the efficiency and
effectiveness of your existing network.
If you are not sure that your network is doing what you need it to do, call a qualified consultant.
